HEATHER HAMILTON, SAW co-founder/producer (owner, Long’s Wines & Liquors) is very excited about continuing Bay Ridge’s new annual tradition, the Storefront Art Walk! Born a fifth generation San Diegan, Heather made her way east against the tide in 1995 after completing her Theatrical Arts degree at UCLA. She enjoyed a successful career in NYC as a Broadway theatre manager and producer. She worked on many noteworthy productions such as Cabaret, Jekyll & Hyde, Seussical, Golden Child, and Kathleen Turner’s Tallulah.
In 2008, Heather became the proud owner of Long’s Wines & Liquors in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. As a wine enthusiast and looking to invest herself in her own enterprise, Heather found the perfect fit with Long’s. Long’s was established back in 1983 and is known for its deep sense of community and customer service. Heather is an active member of the Bay Ridge community serving on the 5th Ave BID. Heather also seeks to promote wine education and local New York vintners and distillers.
Heather is married to Brooklyn boy Todd Portnoff, who is a project manager for the internet consulting firm HUGE. She is also the proud mother of Caitlyn Portnoff, who has been saying since she was five years old that she wants to be an art teacher when she grows up.
JOHN AVELLUTO, SAW co-founder/producer (owner, The Owl’s Head wine bar) was born and raised in Gravesend, Brooklyn, attended high school in Bay Ridge, and now lives here with his wife and two lovely daughters.
A first generation Italian-American, John has always been immersed in food culture, both at home and professionally. He worked for his father, Domenico Avelluto, at his two successful restaurants, first Mazzei on the Upper East Side and then Hostaria Mazzei in Port Chester. More recently, he has spent the past two and a half years talking about fancy grapes at Long’s Wines and Liquors in Bay Ridge.
John earned an MFA in painting from Brooklyn College, often mixing the concepts of food and art in the restaurant and his studio. With a specialty in faux painting and a wicked sense of humor, John’s paintings have awed audiences and garnered critical acclaim in ink and the blogosphere. After talking about food and grape for years, John is very excited to have opened a dedicated wine bar, The Owl’s Head, in his neighborhood.
DAVID GITT, SAW artist selection juror lives and works in Brooklyn. He is invested in public art and its place in the community. Through Bay Ridge SAW and other public exhibitions, David is working on finding new ways to display and distribute work.
