SAW provides a nontraditional outlet for emerging and mid-career Brooklyn artists to create site-specific installation in storefront settings. Exploring a symbiotic relationship between art, community, and commerce, SAW raises awareness for the arts in the underserved neighborhood of Bay Ridge, while exposing audiences to contemporary art and celebrating local business. SAW commissions new work that is original and integrative, deriving from the storefront spaces both aesthetically and conceptually.
Call for Artists
SAW is looking for artists to participate in the 8th Annual Bay Ridge Storefront Art Walk, which will take place from May 13th, 2017- June 24th, 2017. Selected artists will create site-specific installations in storefronts along the 5th Avenue BID corridor. Artists will be required to coordinate the installation of their work in participating storefronts along the 5th Avenue BID corridor. To view a list of business that have participated in past Storefront Art Walks, click here. (Please note this is not a comprehensive list of available storefronts.)
Participating artists will be selected by a panel of curators, arts administrators, and artists. The 15 selected artists will each receive a minimum stipend of $250 (stipends are subject to increase depending on available funding) to create new work that will be installed for the duration of SAW. Public programs and an opening reception will be scheduled through the run of the event.
The Bay Ridge SAW is a unique project which enables the dialogue and collaboration between artist and the 5th Ave Bay Ridge business community and residents. As such, participating artists outside the area should be prepared to travel to Bay Ridge to communicate with the proposed and selected storefronts. The SAW will have liaisons who will help to facilitate the process, but the artist will be primarily responsible for scheduling and coordination with the storefront.
Please note that all transportation/installation costs will be the artists’ responsibility, and must be covered by the stipend. Artists are not required to have selected a site prior to applying, but it is encouraged that they be familiar with venues along 5th Avenue.
Artists of all media are encouraged to apply.
- One paragraph artist statement
- One paragraph hypothetical proposal (note: This allows jurors to asses the applicants comprehension and ability to conceive of a project for the SAW. Artists begin selection of a storefront after being accepted)
- 5 .jpg images of work, 600×800 pixels at 72dpi max. With corresponding image list. (note: We cannot accept video as an application material. Please use video stills)
*Please note, only artists living or working in Brooklyn will be considered.
