Bay Ridge Storefront Art Walk Kicks Off Eighth Year
Includes Young Artist Program with Fontbonne Students

Bay Ridge, Brooklyn – The Bay Ridge Storefront Art Walk (SAW) will launch its interactive art happening along Fifth Avenue in Bay Ridge on Saturday, May 13, 2017. This year, fifteen working artists—all from Brooklyn—were chosen by a jury to create unique site-specific art installations in collaboration with merchants along the avenue from 68th Street to 84th Street.

The storefronts along 5th Avenue will be the platform to exhibit these works, offering Bay Ridge residents and visitors a unique opportunity to engage with the visual arts and explore the dialogue between commerce, art and community.

The artists were selected by a jury of five based on artistic merit, feasibility, and an ability to successfully engage with the Bay Ridge community. The members of the jury included Annelie McGavin; Cheim and Read; Michael David, David and Schweitzer Contemporary, Katherine Toukhy, 2015 SAW artist; Joseph Shahadi, 2016 SAW Artist and Co-Founder/Executive Director of The Art of Brooklyn Film Festival; and Sophia Chizuco, 2016 SAW Artist.

Additionally, 2017 is the first year that SAW will include its Young Artist Program in collaboration with Fontbonne Hall Academy. The program provides a unique opportunity to a young Arts Major looking for a future in the arts by immersing them in the SAW program, in turn building their portfolio for college admission and their overall sensibilities as an artist.

The Young Artist Program, which worked with Fontbonne Academy this year, was led by SAW board member Jeannine Bardo, a local artist and art educator, who said of the program, “Working with the talented Fontbonne students in tandem with their teacher Lauren Gueli was a great experience. The students were introduced to the SAW and the process of applying for a public work, they researched and brainstormed independently and were gently guided through process. Each participating artist produced a portfolio-ready piece that was thoughtful and of a high caliber. Lauren Silverman was the winning young artist, but the jurors were impressed with all of the applicants’ work.”

The 8th annual Bay Ridge SAW will officially open in front of the Community Board 10 District Office, located at 8119 5th Avenue, on May 13, 2017 at 11AM. Special invited guests and speakers will include local elected officials, community leaders, SAW organizers and artists. Artists will then be stationed at their installation sites at storefronts along 5th Avenue from 11:15 until 1PM. From 1PM until 4PM, there will be an after party celebration and fundraiser at The Owl’s Head wine bar, located at 479 74th Street. The community is encouraged to walk the length of the art walk, talk to the artists, experience the artwork and join the fundraiser afterward. Walking maps indicating the installation sites and artists will be distributed at participating businesses.

SAW was created in 2010 by local business owners John Avelluto (The Owl’s Head wine bar) and Heather Hamilton (Long’s Wine and Liquors) as a way to showcase the diverse community of Bay Ridge and give it a unique platform for engagement and dialogue with the visual arts. While Bay Ridge is home to many artists and art-lovers, the neighborhood is under-served and underfunded in terms of public arts spending and grants. The SAW, now in its eighth year, is sponsored by the 5th Avenue Business Improvement District, Brooklyn Arts Council, Sixpoint Brewery and Bubbles and Suds.
